Every GTU student reaches the same point: a form asks for "percentage" but the marksheet shows a CGPA or CPI. GTU has exactly one official conversion, and it has not changed since it was notified in 2012. This guide gives you the formula, the class bands, and worked examples so you can convert your own result in a few seconds.
SPI, CPI and CGPA — what's the difference?
Students use the words loosely, but they measure different things:
- SPI (Semester Performance Index) — your performance in a single semester. You get a fresh SPI every semester.
- CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) — the credit-weighted average of all semesters completed so far. It is the running overall score.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) — for courses longer than two years, GTU computes the degree CGPA from the last four semesters of performance.
The important thing for conversion is that the same formula applies to all three — SPI, CPI and CGPA convert to percentage identically.
How to convert GTU CPI/CGPA to percentage
- Take your CPI or CGPA (on the 10-point scale).
- Subtract 0.5.
- Multiply the result by 10.
Worked examples
| CPI / CGPA | Calculation | Percentage | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.00 | (9.00 − 0.5) × 10 | 85.00% | First Class with Distinction |
| 8.40 | (8.40 − 0.5) × 10 | 79.00% | First Class with Distinction |
| 7.50 | (7.50 − 0.5) × 10 | 70.00% | First Class with Distinction |
| 7.00 | (7.00 − 0.5) × 10 | 65.00% | First Class |
| 6.50 | (6.50 − 0.5) × 10 | 60.00% | First Class |
| 6.00 | (6.00 − 0.5) × 10 | 55.00% | Second Class |
| 5.50 | (5.50 − 0.5) × 10 | 50.00% | Second Class |
| 5.00 | (5.00 − 0.5) × 10 | 45.00% | Pass Class |
Going the other way: percentage to CPI/CGPA
Some application forms give you a percentage and want the CGPA. Reverse the formula:
Class / division bands
The same notification defines the equivalent class from CPI or CGPA:
| CPI / CGPA | Equivalent class |
|---|---|
| 7.1 and above | First Class with Distinction |
| 6.5 and above (below 7.1) | First Class |
| 5.5 and above (below 6.5) | Second Class |
| Below 5.5 | Pass Class |
Departments, recruiters and admission committees sometimes quote a higher distinction cut-off (for example 8.5). That is their own criterion, not the university's conversion rule — always cite the formula above and let them apply their own filter.
Use the marksheet number for anything official
The formula is good for quickly filling forms, estimating eligibility, or converting a number you already have. But for jobs, higher studies, GATE or government applications, use the percentage printed on your consolidated GTU marksheet, or apply for an official CPI/CGPA-to-percentage certificate through your college exam section. A self-calculated figure is an estimate; the certificate is proof.
